If you needed to only have one ingredient to take care of your home and your personal hygiene, baking soda is the ingredient you need. From toothpaste to kitchen scrub, or shoe odor neutralizer… There’s very little baking soda can’t do. Baking soda is inexpensive and yet provides a lot of benefits in our house. Let’s run a list of the great ways we can use baking soda:
Baking soda is a must have to any one who has stomach issues or a sensitive belly. Also after a little too many drinks, this magic ingredient can save you from a bad hangover! It helps balance the pH in your body and kills mold and parasites! Simply put 1 tsp in a jar of water and drink it. It helps with the symptoms of gout and can also reduce muscle pain and fatigue.
It’s properties makes it a great ingredient when making your deodorant, your toothpaste and your mouthwash! (it’s great to remove plaques and whiten your teeth).
If you have a toenail fungus, soak your feet in hot water and baking soda, repeat for a few days and it’ll disappear very quickly.
It can be powerful exfoliant as well. Put 1 tsp of baking soda in 1/2 cup of warm water and you’ll have a natural paste you can use on your face. Massage you skin in circular motion and there you go! If you have acne (like I still do), add a drop of chamomile essential oil.
If you have allergy rashes or sunburn put 1 tsp in some water to create a paste and rub it on the targeted area. I’d recommend adding a few drops of St Johns Wort oil great for its skin inflammatory properties. Here’s a link to purchase it.
You’ll never want to go back to main distributor brands after you try to make your own shampoo with baking soda. One of the main reason is that modern “traditional” shampoo remove our natural oils which leads our scalp to produce too much oils. Baking soda doesn’t. Use 1 part of BS for 3 parts of water and you are done. I’ll post a recipe soon to show how to improve your shampoo and make it fully yours.
Clean counter, pots, pans, coffee and tea pots (even your car actually.. oui oui). It does wonder when it comes to removing grease and dirt. Let your pots sit in baking soda for 15minutes and then rinse. Feeling creative? Add some drops of Thyme essential oil to your mix, it’s great for it’s anti bacterial and antiseptic properties. More info on Thyme and its properties here.
Clean your carpet. Put some powder on your carpet, let it sit for 15 minutes and vacuum. You’ll have a clean carpet without the chemicals you’d find “regular products”.
Baking soda is great to remove odors and clean great and dirt you can use it for so many things, it’s crazy!
Fridge and Shoe Odor: Put a small jar or baking soda in your fridge or some in your smelly shoes to remove odors. Shoe wise, let it sit for a few minutes and the smell will magically go away!
